Checklist pneumatic equipment

Machinery or installations must be designed, constructed and equipped in such a way as to avoid all hazards which may be caused by pneumatic energy. These requirements result from the European Machinery Directive.

Reliable pneumatic systems

The European Machinery Directive requires in Annex I, paragraph 1.5.3, to design, construct and equip a machine in such a way that all potential risks arising from pneumatic energy are avoided. This avoids hazards to persons.

Energy supply other than electricity

Where machinery is powered by source of energy other than electricity, it must be so designed, constructedand equipped as to avoid all potential risks associated with such sources of energy.

A number of European standards have been drawn up to specify this protection objective, in particular EN ISO 4414:2010 Pneumatic fluid power - General rules and safety requirements for systems and their components. Other directives, such as the Pressure Equipment Directive, must also be observed.

Pneumatics often includes a safety-related pneumatic control system, the assessment of which must be carried out on the basis of EN ISO 12100, EN ISO 13849 Part 1 and Part 2 and, if necessary, machine-specific C-type standards.

Verification of the pneumatic equipment

To support pneumatic designers as well as safety engineers, the Annex B to EN ISO 4414 provides a "Checklist of pneumatic equipment for machines and systems".

The checklist is intended to help to check the pneumatic equipment of machinery and equipment for conformity with the essential requirements of EU directives. The checklist has been compiled under consideration of numerous regulations, standards and rules, but does not claim to be complete.
