In the European Union, the guidelines are given by EU Directive 89/655 see Paragraph 2.14. This indicates that all workplace machines should be equipped with one disconnecting device for each power source in order to enable a simple and safe shut-off and shutdown procedure.

“every piece of equipment must be fitted with clearly visible devices with which it can be separated from every energy source”

The European standard EN 50110-1 describes the safety procedure before working on electric equipment:

  1. disconnect completely
  2. secure against re-connection
  3. verify that the installation is dead
  4. carry out earthing and short-circuiting
  5. provide protection against adjacent live parts
